Sociology

You have probably heard the word ‘Sociology’ used but what exactly does it mean? Sociology is the study of society. Sociologists look at the world around them and attempt to explain what they see. Sociologists use a variety of methods to research different areas of social life and then use theories to explain their results. What you will discover through the course is that sociologists never agree – there is never a right or wrong answer!

Sociologists attempt to describe and explain a variety of social life including answers to the following questions:

  • Why do girls do better in education than boys?
  • Is religion a goods or bad thing?
  • Why do we live in families?
  • Are some groups more criminal than others?
  • Does the education system really help individuals?
  • Does religion change the world?
  • Is the police force racist?

In year 12, students study family and households, education and research methods.

In year 13, students study religion, crime and deviance and research methods.
