Important Updates

Year 9

Course Content

A total of five units are covered in the Year 9 course.

Unit 1 Development and Fair Trade

The theme of Fair Trade is investigated as a development strategy. Students consider what 'development' means and how it can be measured. They identify differences in development between countries and the effects of these differences on quality of life for people. The core ideas are then researched and applied to Ghana, which is contrasted to the level of development in Japan, which students studied in Year 8.

Unit 2 Geography of Health

Students study topical geographical issues featured in the media including obesity and HIV/AIDS. They consider why these topics make geographical issues newsworthy and how peoples lives are affected by these issues, including their own and the local community.

Unit 3 Globalisation and the Fashion Industry

Globalisation is about the global connections which influence our lives and others around the world. Students study the Fashion Industry and how materials/products are sourced, manufactured and marketed and the influence of Trans-National Corporations on the environment and people.

Unit 4 Sustainable Tourism

In this unit students study the growth of the tourism industry in the UK and how important this industry is becoming as an economic activity. Students will also look at impacts of tourism in LEDCs and will complete an assessment task which involves developed tourism facilities in a small island in the Pacific Ocean.

Unit 5 Weather and Climate

Students investigate the differences between weather and climate. They complete enquiry exercises to explore local weather conditions (using weather measuring equipment and ICT resources), Britain's climate and global climates. Case studies will focus on extreme weather events such as hurricanes and Drought.

Group Organisation/Setting

Students will be taught across Mixed ability tutor groups across KS3.
