Author Visit - 15th October 2012

Author of the popular ‘Ash Mistry Chronicles’ series of books, Sarwat Chadda, visited Burntwood on Tuesday 2nd October.

Local Author Visits Burntwood - 25th April 2012

Local author, Jim Carrington, came to Burntwood to talk to Year 9 classes about his books ‘Inside My Head’ and ‘In The Bag’. Students enjoyed the talk and asked a range of thoughtful questions on the issues raised in his novels.


‘FAB Book Award’ Finale Event - 30th March 2012

On Thursday 22nd March Burntwood students joined students from five other Wandsworth secondary schools at the Professional Centre for the finale event of the ‘FAB Book Award’.

Each school gave a presentation championing one of the shortlisted books and the event concluded with a student poll that voted this year’s FAB Book Award winner as ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ by Malorie Blackman, a very popular choice amongst Burntwood students. Shortlist author, Sita Brahmachari, also attended and spoke about her new book ‘Jasmine Skies’.


Peter Chand Visits Burntwood - 14th March 2012

As a celebration of the 200th anniversary of the first publication of Grimms’ Fairy Tales, storyteller Peter Chand visited Burntwood this month. Students in Years 7 and 8 thoroughly enjoyed his modern retelling of the Tales, many of which Peter believes came originally from the East.

There was plenty of audience participation during the storytelling, including song and dance.


Sophie McKenzie Visits Burntwood - 15th December 2011

Sophie McKenzie visited back in December and spoke to students in the Library at lunchtime followed by a talk to Year 7 about how she got into writing after doing a creative writing course, providing very useful hints on how to start writing. Sophie is an award winning author; ‘Girl, Missing’ and her ‘Medusa Projects’ books have won a number of prestigious awards.


Author Visit Bali Rai - 30th November 2011

Bali Rai visited Burntwood and talked to Year 8 students about his new book, ‘Killing Honour’. He also spoke to Year 7 about his book ‘Revenge of number two’, a story about bullying in a secondary school. His book ‘(Un)arranged marriage’ is now a GCSE text.


Thrills and Chills at The Library Party - 23th October 2011

Sixty Year 7 students attended the Library’s ‘Friday Night Fears’ party on the 14th of October. The Year 7s thoroughly enjoyed an evening of spooky games, competitions and stories followed by pizza and a movie

Author Visit Mary Hooper - 20th September 2011

This month, author Mary Hooper visited Burntwood School to talk to Year 7 students about her new historical novel, ‘Velvet’, a romantic thriller set in Victorian London.

Riverside Art and Literature Trip - 28th June 2011

This month, 55 of the students who took part in this year’s Carnegie Medal reading group enjoyed a trip to locations near to the River Thames to explore links between literature, poetry and art.

Caroline Lawrence Visits Burntwood - 25th March 2011

Caroline Lawrence, author of the very popular ‘Roman Mysteries’ series of books, visited Burntwood this month. She spoke first to the whole of Year 7 and then to Latin students in Years 8 and 9 about her writing techniques and how she uses ancient Roman sources to develop her characters and plots. Students thoroughly enjoyed the talk.
