Future

The long term plans of the school are to gain the International School Award for a second time. Our aim is to have links with schools on every continent. The work done on the Global Curriculum and international issues will be across the curriculum at all Key Stages. The Olympic values will continue to play a part in this as we try to make links with a school in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, the site of the 2016 Olympics.

The school is currently engaged in a building programme which will finish in 2013. Most of the present buildings (built in the 1950s) are being demolished and being replaced by well designed new ones. The school is undergoing a rebranding including a reappraisal of our aims and objectives. It is more than likely that we will still include the values of the Olympic Movement as they tie in closely with our own.

We would therefore wish to keep the values of the Olympic and Paralympic games at the heart of our community.

What?

The school has links with a school in Tianjin in China and has worked on a series of initiatives with them including the Olympic Games of 2008 which were held in Beijing. This has included exchange visits, curriculum projects and swopping Olympic memorabilia.

We also have links with schools in France, Spain, India and Barbados. The school has exchanged materials with these schools too.

The whole school priorities for 2011-12 have just been decided and include a celebration of the London 2012 Olympics. Each subject area of the school will do something to celebrate and mark the Olympics.

The Physical Education Department is planning to invest the summer sports days with some Olympic traditions. For example; we will award three different categories of medal and present bouquets with each one.

By joining the Get Set Network we will be able to share these activities electronically and make contact with young people across the country and across the world.

Values

The Olympic values of friendship, respect and excellence are all reflected in our school’s aims. The Paralympic values of determination, courage, equality and inspiration are also featured. Our school ethos and is long established and embedded.

The school has a series of its own flags and one of them is our ‘Friendship’ flag. It has an image of the school flower on it; a red carnation which is the symbol of friendship. All members of the Burntwood community are encouraged to be on friendly terms with each other.

We are a UNICEF Rights Respecting School and respect for other peoples’ faith, culture and background is the cornerstone of our Diversity Policy.

Our mission statement is ‘The Best Education Today for the Women of Tomorrow’. Students at Burntwood are encouraged to achieve excellence in all they do. Our school logo is a bare tree with deep roots. Behind this tree is a rising sun, the symbol of new beginnings.

In our curriculum the values of determination, courage, equality and inspiration are used to inform our teaching and our enrichment. The range of community links; school, local, national and international is strength of the school. The participation in these is outstanding.

Additional

Burntwood School is a school for girls and although there are some boys in the sixth form we have a focus on girls' education. We have an interest in the participation of girls in sports and other activities both in and beyond school.

We have always celebrated the Olympic Games (since we opened in 1986) and will continue to do so as we believe they are the manifestation of a movement whose ideals and values are similar to our own.
