Plans for the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2012

Burntwood School - A Member of The Get Set Network

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games have awarded Burntwood School with a plaque to acknowledge our ongoing commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic values of respect, excellence, friendship, courage, determination, inspiration and equality.

This means that over the course of the coming year we will receive access to exclusive competitions and tickets for some students to attend the Olympic Games.

Plans to Celebrate the Games

The following plans are already underway to celebrate and promote the values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games:

  • An Olympic Week at the end of the Summer term (Year 7-10, 12)
  • An Olympic flag designing competition (Years 7-10)
  • An Olympic style Sports Day (Years 7 and 8)
  • A variety of sporting activities during National Sports Week (Years 7-10)
  • An Awards Evening based on the 7 Olympic and Paralympic values (all Years)
  • A geography project on regeneration in the East End (Year 12)
  • A D&T project on designing and making Olympic medals (Year 9)
  • A joint D&T and Art project to design, build and decorate our own Burntwood Olympic podium (Year 10)

As an International School it is important to us that our Olympic celebrations have an international theme. We will be officially supporting our partner schools in Barbados and China and are also following a number of other teams from countries that we have connections with such as France, Spain, Italy, Poland, Germany, India and Nigeria. Our partner school in China will also be holding an Olympic Week later this academic year and we will be using a variety of technologies to share our celebrations.

These celebrations are particularly significant since from March 2012 students will be able to benefit from our newly built Sports Hall with state of the art sporting facilities.

Successes so far

Year 11 Ball Girls

Burntwood is delighted to announce that it has been successful in its application to provide a team of seven students to be ball girls at the 2012 Olympic tennis events at Wimbledon.

Following intensive training with Ms Potter and the PE department, Year 11 students Nurhan Abbud, Mia Brown, Violet Chaudoir, Eve Dolman-Bowles, Maya Dolman-Bowles, Kyra Fraser and Maryam Mohamed were thrilled when they heard that they had passed the rigorous audition.

Torch Bearers

Two Burntwood students have also been successfully nominated as torch bearers. Zoe Jones 9-6 and Racquel Robinson 11-6 will carry the torch along part of the London route on the 26th July 2012. Zoe was nominated by the PE Department for her outstanding contribution to Burntwood’s successful BSF bid and her charity work for Amnesty International. Racquel was also nominated by the PE Department for her fantastic contribution to Burntwood’s Junior Sports Leaders programme, supporting events including the Wandsworth Disability Gala, Jump Rope for Heart and Wandsworth’s Primary Sportshall and cross country competitions.
