Exchanging Values in Macedonia - 10th October 2011
Ten Year 9 students accompanied by Miss Zafirovska, Ms Heipl and Mr Fyvie visited Macedonia at the beginning of October. The trip, funded by a EU grant, was organised by Wandsworth Council in partnership with Burntwood School and the Municipality of Aerodrom in Skopje, capital of Macedonia, as well as students and teachers from Karlovac, Croatia.
The aim of this ‘Exchanging Values’ project is to enable students to learn more about the cultures and values of other Europeans and to share experiences of school life. The four-day trip included visits to three schools where students delivered presentations and engaged in group work in a range of curriculum areas.
There were also visits to some of the historical and cultural sites around Skopje. These included the 10th century ‘Fortress Kale’, originally dating from the Byzantine period, a ski lift trip to the Vodno Mountain, Mother Theresa’s birth place and the River Treska’s picturesque canyon.
The students thoroughly enjoyed participating in lessons with their Macedonian and Croatian counterparts and were overwhelmed by the warm welcome they were given and the hospitality of the Macedonian people.
