Questions:

1. How will staff/students identify contractors?
All contractors will wear PPE and will be easily identified. Also, if anyone is on site they will sign in and out as our normal visitor procedures.

2. What will happen with deliveries for the building?
A service road will be opened along the length of the site. Vehicles will enter from Burntwood Lane, travel the length of the road and then leave at the new exit onto St George’s Grove.

3. Asbestos – How will it be treated?
A type 2 survey has already taken place. There is a fuller probe to find out exactly what is where in the building. This is known as the type 3 survey. A formal notification is posted. Highly qualified specialists are then brought into remove the asbestos in a controlled manner. There is time in the programme to deal with this properly. It is a legal process that all contractors need to follow.

4. Will the school be bigger in terms of square meters?
Yes, modern curriculum requires different types and size of accommodation. Also, we have some very exciting spaces that we don’t need to timetable like the science interactive theatre, business skills centre and some performing arts spaces.

5. Easily maintained?
Yes, it has been designed to be easily maintained. The school is being encouraged to take out a Facilities Management contract to help this project. Also there is a three year defects period.

6. Will the students be able to see contractors at work?
The main hoarding will be 2.4m. We are also looking at some other approaches to screening in more sensitive ways.

7. Delays – Where are these most likely to happen?
The programme has been planned carefully and there are a number of flexibilities within it. However, you never know what will happen when you start digging the ground, weather, unexploded ordnance. We have planned as much as we possibly can.

8. Parking – Where will contractors park?
They won’t. They will be told to use public transport. There will be no parking on site.

9. Will students still have outside space?
Yes, all phases have been planned so that students still have maximum use of the landscape that’s available.

10. Concrete Vibrators
Engine noise and vehicle noise will be the main disturbances. A lot of noisy work will be done outside most school days. Also, there will be regular meetings between school and the contractors so this work can be coordinated.

11. Have we let the neighbours know?
Yes, there have been a number of public consultation meetings and exhibitions in the hall. Lend Lease produce newsletters and they also make contact with particular neighbours if there are any particular works that we think will be an issue. Notice boards, coffee mornings and leaflet days.

12. Will there be lots of weekend work?
The working week is Monday to Friday 8am-6pm. Some special deliveries may only be able to happen at weekends such as putting up tower cranes.

This is a huge opportunity for our students. ‘Constructor Ambassadors’ will work with our students. Charles Harper and Dave Gibbs are already engaging students in the design process. There is a commitment to provide learning opportunities.

There will be viewing panels in the hoardings. Groups of students being brought onto site to see what is going on at various times.
