Our Philosophy

'The best education today for the women of tomorrow'

Our MISSION STATEMENT is underpinned by the following aims . . .

  • To encourage enquiring minds and a life-long interest in learning.
  • To promote an understanding community in which all members are respected and their talents and achievements celebrated.
  • To provide an excellent challenging education which enables all individuals to reach their full potential.
  • To provide a wide range of opportunities and experiences which will broaden our students' horizons.
  • To develop thinking, informed and confident women who will be able to meet the challenges of e 21st Century.
  • To provide a calm, orderly environment in which students and staff can feel secure.
  • To maintain a strong Burntwood identity which fosters success and the high self-esteem of both staff and students.
  • To communicate clearly the school aims so that they are both understood and supported by the families of our students.

History

Burntwood was opened as a new school in September 1986 although the buildings date from 1958. A new forward-looking school was created by Governors, staff and students to realise our mission statement 'the best education today for the women of tomorrow'. There was a real commitment to girl's education and achievement.

The school is a 'foundation' school linked financially to the Local Education Authority, Wandsworth, but our Governors control admissions, staffing, buildings and curriculum policies.

School Emblems

Burntwood's emblem was designed by students to mark the foundation of the school. It appears on our uniform and our stationery. The tree appears skeletal but the rising sun behind and the tree's deep roots symbolise birth and opportunity. Burntwood students will clothe their personal tree with the 'leaves' of their many achievements.

We fly flags of the nations of our students and their families. One of our most important flags is that bearing many candles, our symbol of 'Faith and Hope' which is flown on religious festivals and to mark notable world events. We have a school logo flag and shown flying here is our flag of friendship.

Achievements

In September 2003 we begin a new phase in our development as a Science Specialist School.

The school has also achieved the Artsmark Gold and Sportsmark awards.

Students

The school numbers 1,680 students aged 11 to 18, with over 300 in the Sixth Form. 283 students are admitted each year from a wide range of primary schools, in several London Boroughs. We currently have students drawn from over 50 different nationalities and a wide range of languages are spoken.

Facilities

The building, dating from 1958, is an award winning design by London County Council architects. A landscaped site of 13 acres provides a campus style design together with an adjoining sports field. Teaching is centred in two main blocks containing specialist areas for Science laboratories, Computer networks, Design & Technology workshops, Mathematics rooms, the Library, English and Media Studies, Art rooms, Dance, Drama and Music areas, Language laboratories and classrooms.

Separate buildings include a large hall (which seats the whole school for Assembly) and a drama hall, a staff room, a student refectory and a Physical Education building which includes three large gymnasia and a swimming pool. The Sixth Form have their own block.

All visitors to the school enter via the Administration Block where they will find a reception area run by students from the Sixth Form and Year 8. This block houses Site Services and Central Administration.
