Action Research, Inhouse Training and ECT

At Burntwood School, we are dedicated to fostering professional development through a range of initiatives, including action research focused on teaching priorities, an Early Career Teacher induction programme, and in-house CPD workshops on diverse topics. We also offer online learning through Judicium. See below to find out more information about our offerings and how they support staff in enhancing their teaching practice and leadership skills.

Action Research

At Burntwood we are committed to action research.  The focus of our action research is based around our teaching and learning whole school priorities.

Past topics have included: growth mindset; assessment for learning; whole school literacy and numeracy; homework; wellbeing and memorisation. Our action research follows the model illustrated:

We  follow the action research cycle whereby we begin by using baseline data to identify a problem before devising a plan, taking action and then evaluating the outcome.

Early Career Teachers

Burntwood School run an ECT induction programme that meets all of the statutory requirements underpinned by the Early Career Framework (ECF). It provides ECTs with a supportive environment that develops them and equips them with the tools to be effective and successful teachers.

The programme is quality assured by Wandle Teaching School Hub, our ‘appropriate body’, and is led by UCL Institute of Education and their delivery partner Wandle Teaching School Hub.

In-House Training

Monday CPD sessions take place during the period 6 meeting slot; these meetings are directed time. A calendar of dates and sessions is published at the start of the academic year. In total we offer 7 CPD slots and staff are expected to choose 5. This creates flexibility for staff to plan the CPD training around their own personal needs.

Monday CPD sessions are varied and are tailored to meet the training needs of staff in response to:

  • Whole-school priorities
  • Issues identified during the self-review cycle
  • Staff requests
  • We encourage staff to volunteer to run sessions in order to share a skill which they have; it can also contribute to their evidence for appraisal.
