Burntwood Student Takes Off with Airbus Apprenticeship
When I was deciding what to do after sixth form, I knew I wanted to keep learning but I also wanted to gain real-world experience at the same time. That’s why the degree apprenticeship route appealed to me so much. It allows me to study towards a recognised qualification while working in a professional environment, which means I’ll be developing skills, knowledge, and experience all at once - all while being paid and not having to take out a university loan.
I’m now starting a degree apprenticeship with Airbus in Digital and Technology Solutions, and I’m really excited about the opportunities ahead. The aerospace sector is at the cutting edge of technology, and being able to contribute to projects that have a global impact feels like a unique chance to combine my interest in technology with a career that has real purpose.
I chose this path because I wanted something that went beyond traditional study. University is a fantastic option for many people, but I knew I would thrive in a more practical environment where I could see how my learning directly applies to real challenges. The idea of working on live projects while earning a degree at the same time made the apprenticeship route stand out. It also means that by the time I finish, I’ll have several years of experience in the industry alongside my qualification.
The journey to securing the apprenticeship was both challenging and competitive. The application process involved online tests, assessment centres, and multiple interviews, and at times it felt intense. However, it was also a great learning experience. I grew so much in terms of confidence, resilience, and how to present myself professionally.
I couldn’t have got through the process without the incredible support of my careers advisor, Ms King. She helped me every step of the way, from refining my CV and preparing for interviews, to running through practice questions and giving me constructive feedback. What made the biggest difference was that her support didn’t stop at the end of the school day. She continued helping me throughout the summer, often out of school hours, right up until I received my offer towards the end of the holidays. Having that guidance and encouragement gave me the motivation to keep pushing myself even when the process felt tough.
Looking back, I feel proud of the route I’ve chosen. A degree apprenticeship is a big commitment, but it also feels like an incredible opportunity to grow, both personally and professionally. I’m gaining independence, building confidence, and setting myself up with skills that will last a lifetime.
For anyone considering their next steps, I’d say apprenticeships are definitely worth exploring. They open doors to industries you might never have imagined working in, and thanks to the support I had from Burntwood and Ms King, I felt fully prepared to take this step and make the most of it.
