International School Award
Burntwood School is a proud holder of the British Council International School Award.
The British Council International School Award (ISA) is a benchmarking scheme that accredit schools as having an outstanding level of support for nurturing global citizenship in young people. Schools are awarded the accreditation for their promotion of international awareness and understanding as part of their curriculum. This means that we are committed to developing an international ethos within the school and demonstrate outstanding practice in our international work.
The British Council said
“The young women being nurtured at Burntwood are extremely fortunate to be at a school offering such tremendous opportunities for them to appreciate and reach out to the rest of the world through a remarkable range of activities. These might be creative writing with Sao Paulo, the KS3 Eco Club collaboration with a link school in the Yemen, engagement in the daily flag celebration or following an intrepid member of staff rowing the Atlantic.”
Ethos
Our ethos at Burntwood is to prepare our young women for the world and give them the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. We embrace diversity and challenge our students to develop their understanding of the world beyond their local communities.
Curriculum
The Burntwood curriculum is broad, diverse and international in its focus providing students with knowledge and understanding of the world. A range of subjects at all key stages develops their awareness and appreciation of other cultures and their understanding of the nature of key global issues, thus enabling them to feel connected to their global community.
Personal Development
Extra-curricular activities and links with overseas schools complement the curriculum and embed the international ethos within the culture of the school.
For example:
- Our UNICEF Ambassadors raise awareness of global problems.
- Whole school celebrations such as ‘Culture Week’ and International Mother Tongue Day celebrate our diversity.
- Partnerships with schools overseas put lessons and world events into context and develop cultural capital.
