UNICEF RIGHTS RESPECTING

 Welcome to Burntwood’s UNICEF Rights Respecting School Page

“The UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) award recognises achievement in putting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of a school’s practice to improve well-being and help all children and young people realise their potential.”

Burntwood School is very proud to have been awarded, three consecutive times, the highest level of the Rights Respecting School award: Gold. This recognition comes after years of work raising awareness of children’s rights, having started our rights respecting journey in 2009. We were first accredited Gold in 2016, again in 2019 and most recently in 2022.

At Burntwood, we have a team of student ambassadors who give much of their time, meeting at least one lunch time every week, to promote the UNCRC to our school and in our local community.

Our ambassadors have achieved a tremendous amount, including:

  • Writing and delivering numerous assemblies to Burntwood students and local Primary Schools;
  • Attended the WE Day youth empowerment event at Wembley Arena;
  • Advised visitors from schools and colleges, both from the UK and abroad on their Rights Respecting journeys;
  • Attended numerous International Model United Nations’ Conferences;
  • Had the honour of addressing the Council of Europe to advocate for children’s rights;
  • Raised thousands of pounds for various charities including: our Moroccan link school, SPEAR, Tooting Community Kitchen, Local Dons Action Group, MSF, and having been awarded a bronze level award from Stonewall, the LGBT rights charity;
  • Given out winter boxes to the local community;
  • Marked anti- bullying week with odd socks;
  • Taught lessons on children’s rights in local primary schools including Honeywell, Beatrix Potter, Henry Cavendish and Earlsfield;
  • Worked on a joint project with local primary schools to promote climate change and the importance of recycling/reusing fashion
  • Participated in a treasure hunt for Articles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and a showcase of favourite articles;
  • Hosted a borough Diversity and Inclusion Conference;
  • Attended the Stonewall Education for All LGBT conference;
  • Held a mental health silence day,
  • Hosted a visit from Lord Russell and Baroness Fookes, and spoken via video link and in Person at the Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development's sub-committee on children at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

All of our collective Rights Respecting work has improved the lives of children around the globe and raised awareness of children who have not been allowed to exercise their rights.

Every classroom and office at Burntwood has a Burntwood UNICEF charter to remind our whole community of our commitment to children’s rights. This charter was written by the student ambassadors.

In the last year, our Rights Respecting Burntwood community has been busy helping children and raising awareness of children’s rights here and across the globe. We look forward to continuing to work with our local and global communities to further improve the lives of children who are not able to exercise their rights as set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
