Pupil Premium and Recovery Premium

Context and Vision

In 2024-2025, the estimated pupil premium budget for Burntwood School is £389,550. This budget is utilised by the school to ensure we support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in making the best possible progress.

The Department for Education (DfE) identifies “disadvantaged” students as:

* Eligible for Free School Meals or have been in the last six years;

* Looked After Children (LAC), or those who have previously been looked after by the state, but are now adopted or are subject to a special guardianship order, a child arrangements order or a residence order.

* Children with parents in the Armed Forces.

The Government provides funding, the Pupil Premium, to allow schools to put interventions into place to try and close the gap between disadvantaged students and their peers (DfE 2018).

In 2024, the Education Policy Institute published its annual report which found that disadvantaged pupils are, on average, 19.2 months behind their non-disadvantaged peers at the end of secondary school, the largest gap since 2011, and that persistently disadvantaged students were 22.9 months behind. It also found that the gap is now 1.1 month larger than prior to the pandemic. (EPI, 2024).

Burntwood School is committed to ensuring every young person in our community achieves their potential whilst studying at the school, irrespective of their socio-economic background. Our vision goes well beyond simply narrowing the attainment gap. We are determined to ensure that all students have the qualifications, attributes and cultural capital to succeed in Higher Education and employment.
