Welcome to the Visual Arts and Design Technology (VADT) Department! We are passionate about fostering creativity, critical thinking, and technical expertise in our students. Our curriculum is designed to inspire and develop young artists, designers, engineers, cooks and creatives through a range of practical, engaging, and thought-provoking subjects. Whether you are interested in the visual arts, photography, design technology, or catering, we provide an enriching environment to help you explore, create, and innovate.

Throughout your studies in the VADT department, you will acquire valuable skills and knowledge that will equip you for future success in both creative industries and everyday life. Key skills include: 

  • Creative Problem-Solving: Developing innovative solutions through art and design processes. 
  • Technical Mastery: Gaining proficiency in a variety of techniques and materials across fine art, photography, textiles, graphics, product design, and hospitality. 
  • Critical Thinking: Evaluating and analysing design and art concepts, understanding their cultural, historical, and social significance. 
  • Communication: Expressing ideas clearly and effectively in both visual and verbal forms.

Key Stage 3 (KS3) 

At Key Stage 3, students are introduced to the basics of art, design, and technology. The focus is on developing core skills, exploring different media, and learning foundational design principles. Areas of study include: 

  • Drawing and Painting: Basic drawing techniques, colour theory, and composition. 
  • Sculpture and 3D Design: Introduction to sculpting techniques, spatial awareness, and model-making. 
  • Product Design: Basic principles of product design, sketching, and prototyping. 
  • Textiles and Fashion: Exploring materials, patterns, and surface design. 
  • Photography: Introduction to photography techniques and digital design software. 

Key Stage 4 (KS4) 

At Key Stage 4, students specialize in a range of subjects where they can further develop their skills and knowledge. The subjects offered allow students to deepen their creativity and technical abilities, with an emphasis on independence and innovation. Areas of study include:

  • Art: A focus on painting, drawing, sculpture, and mixed media. Developing personal expression and technical ability in creating original artwork. 
  • Photography: Students learn digital and darkroom photography, exploring both technical skills and artistic composition. 
  • Textile Design: Students explore fashion design, textile art, and fabric manipulation, focusing on creating both functional and creative pieces. 
  • Graphic Design: Designing graphics and visual communication using software such as Adobe Illustrator, alongside hand-drawing techniques. Emphasis on design for advertising, branding, and digital media. 
  • Product Design: A study of product design, focusing on designing and making practical items, including CAD (Computer-Aided Design), prototyping, and material manipulation. 
  • Hospitality & Catering: This subject explores the principles of food preparation, nutrition, menu planning, and the hospitality industry. Students learn practical culinary skills alongside theoretical knowledge of food safety and service. 

Key Stage 5 (KS5) 

At Key Stage 5, students can explore their chosen area of interest in depth, developing a personal portfolio and refining their skills. The focus is on independent research, experimentation, and the development of an individual artistic or design practice. Areas of study include: 

  • Fine Art: Students create a portfolio based on personal investigations, engaging with a variety of media such as painting, sculpture, and mixed media to develop an individual voice. 
  • Photography: In-depth exploration of both technical and creative aspects of photography. Students focus on building a personal photographic style, including the use of digital and analogue techniques. 
  • 3D Design: Students explore a range of design processes, from concept development through to the creation of functional products, considering factors like ergonomics, sustainability, and materiality. 
  • Fashion & Textiles: Students explore fashion design, garment construction, and textile manipulation. The focus is on developing design ideas and making them into finished pieces. 
  • Graphic Design: Students explore graphic design through digital platforms and hand-drawing techniques, focusing on creating visual communication for real-world contexts like branding, advertising, packaging and illustration. 

Enrichment Opportunities

We believe in offering our students a wide range of enrichment activities to deepen their understanding and broaden their creative experiences. Some of these include: 

  • Field Trips and Visits: Regular trips to galleries, museums, professional kitchens and fashion exhibitions give students the chance to see real-world applications of art, design and catering. 
  • Competitions: There are numerous opportunities to participate in national and international competitions for art, photography, and design, encouraging students to challenge themselves creatively. 
  • Art Exhibitions: Y11 and Y13 students have the opportunity to showcase their work in school-wide exhibitions, sharing their creative projects with a broader audience. 
  • A choice of clubs: students can attend extra-curricular activities to develop advanced technical and conceptual skills and take part in fun activities. 
  • Future prospects: active links with Higher Education partners and employers in the Creative Industries, provide opportunities for visits, workshops, Summer/Winter schools and portfolio advice. 

Opportunities for Scholars

For students who excel in their chosen subject areas, the VADT department offers several advanced opportunities: 

  • Workshops, extracurricular activities and trips: Art and DT Scholars take part in numerous extracurricular workshops and have the opportunity to go on exclusive trips to galleries and exhibitions 
  • Independent Projects: Scholars are encouraged to explore independent research and create work outside the standard curriculum, pushing their boundaries and showcasing innovation. 
  • University and Career Preparation: Guidance on building professional portfolios, applying to universities or design schools, and preparing for careers in the creative industries. 
  • Industry Visits and work experience: Students who are interested in a creative career path have access to exclusive industry professionals, workplace visits and placements 
  • Links with University of the Arts London (UAL): every year, 6th Form Students who are interested in creative pathways have the opportunity to take part in UAL workshops and summer schools. These provide a valuable insight into university study and help to ‘fast-track’ Students onto prestigious Degree courses at UAL.
